Transferring Files

Once you have learned how to log in to the cluster, the second thing you will want to do is transfer files, either to or from the cluster to your own PC.

Windows Users

You will need a 3rd-party application to be able to transfer files. Two of the most popular (and easy to use) are WinSCP and FileZilla. We will look at WinSCP.

Once installed, open WinSCP and you will be presented with the Login Window.

  1. Enter the hostname (enhpc.swan.ac.uk or engimpact.swan.ac.uk)
  2. Enter your username
  3. Enter your password
  4. Click ‘Save’

WinSCP will then ask you for a user-friendly name to save the login session under and also whether you would like to store the password. (If your PC is shared with others then please do not store the password)

Once this is done, WinSCP will display your new session in the list on the left of the main window.

To log in, simple double click on the entry in the list and a new window will open showing any folders and files you may have on the cluster.

If this is the first time you have logged into the cluster using WinSCP then a warning may appear – just select ‘Yes’.

You may then transfer files to and from the cluster by simply dragging them into and out of this window – just like you would between two folders in Windows.
